The Hellfire Romeo's DNA is closely related to its predecessor, using a high-precision semi-active laser (SAL) guidance system to deliver 20-pound bombs to targets up to six miles away. It serves as the primary air weapon for several platforms, including the Army's AH-64 Apache, the Marine Corps' AH-1W Super Cobra, and the Air Force's MQ-9 Reaper UAV.

Today, the stock Hellfire missile is the AGM-114L Longbow, which replaces the laser guidance system with a millimeter wave (MMW) radar, allowing the missile to operate beyond line of sight or with high precision. While the Hellfire Romeo is a general-purpose cruise missile in the Army and Navy's inventory, the Longbow is the primary anti-tank weapon system for the world-renowned Apache tank hunter. "The ability of millimeter waves allows us to ignore things that try to distract us while we move towards the goal," explained Drake. "So whatever they do in terms of smoke or other features they may have on these platforms to distract us, we will ensure that the mission is accomplished."

Having one missile that can perform two tasks is not only convenient in combat, but also a significant cost-effectiveness. The AGM-179 is very similar to the JAGM Hellfire replacement, which means it can be used with existing Hellfire launchers and infrastructure and requires very little training for crew and pilots.
