"Petty Officer Soviak gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to this country," said Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro, adding that his skills as a hospital corpsman and dedication to the mission warrant promotion and recognition.

After Danny Gadzic's grandfather introduced him to military aircraft technology, the teenager began to collect small memories of military history.

Paul Karla shares stories about Gadzic's great-grandfather, an Army bomber pilot in World War II. Gadzic began collecting and building models of bombers and other aircraft.

A few years later, the collection of military relics became a mini-military museum. It has uniform patches, medals, riot gear, helmet and ammunition, including a 3-inch 75mm Marine round.

Some of his memorabilia will be displayed at the Jackson Township Historical Society's one-room schoolhouse reopening celebration at 7756 Fulton DriveNW from 1 to 3 p.m. August 14-15.

Spending hours online researching new artifacts, he bought some of the pieces with the money he had saved. Others were donated, including a compass used by United States Navy Corpsman 1st Class Emmett Hugh Jones, who served in the Russell Islands during World War II. He was the father of Mary Aaby of the Jackson Township Historical Society.

Although Gadzic loved all aspects of military memorabilia, he was drawn to hats and helmets and military aircraft and vehicles.

As a family, the Gadzicshaves visited every military museum and battlefield they could, his mother said, including the Dover Airbase Museum and a tank museum near the Black Forest region of Germany.

While living in Denmark, the family visited Normandy, discovering reminders of the bloody battle that took place more than seven decades earlier.

As Gadzic showed more and more of his collection, his knowledge was evident. He remembered what the item was, its significance in military history and where he got it.

A series of helmets shows the development of protective caps made of steel German Stahlhelm helmets, which have a protective "lip" designed to protect soldiers' ears, to a rare A-8 aircraft helmet used in Dayton used to train the first paratroopers.

He collected army training manuals from the 50s and 60s on booby traps and incendiaries and a number of books dealing with aspects of war and military history.

Among his favorite possessions are the instrument certificate and dog tags of J. Hojard-Olsen, a member of the Royal Danish Air Force. Found at a flea market in Denmark, Gadzic paid less than a dollar for the items.

Gadzic spent time researching the pilot, but hit a dead end with a lack of records. The ones he could find were in Danish.

Other valuable possessions are an instrument panel from a Spitfire and an oil flood valve from a Boeing B-17 strategic bomber, which he bought with his allowance.

As he sifts through the facts about each piece in his collection, Gadzic lights up when he discovers a Soviet desperation tool he bought at an army surplus store in Barberton.

According to Gadzic, the tool was found near Kursk, Russia, the site of the largest tank battle in history.

Margaret Gadzic said her son wanted to share his collection with more people. When news of his collection in Jackson's one-room schoolhouse hit social media, several young people commented on their own stash of military memorabilia.

Gadzic isn't sure where his love of military history will take him. Maybe a museum curator or a history teacher, his mother speculated.

"I love history," he said. "It's important to know about. (They) protect the liberties of the United States and other countries." Rick DeJulio, the third-generation owner of the family that operates DeJulio's Army and Navy Store, will retire and close.

, NY - As word spread Monday morning that one of the oldest family-owned businesses was closing, longtime customers began pouring in.

DeJulio's Army and Navy Store, 666 Burnet Ave., will close this summer. It started as a shoe store in 1929, and became an army surplus store during World War II.

It was suddenly a busy morning at DeJulio's Army and Navy Store, on the corner of Burnet Avenue and Lodi Street. It started as a shoe store in 1929, and became a military surplus store in 1942.

Recently, his core business has been rugged work in outdoor clothing, boots and shoes and some camping gear, said Rick DeJulio, the third-generation owner.

"The army is not doing more than it has to," he said. "So we're not quite an army surplus like in the old days."

DeJulio's is now running a "going out of business" sale, with 20 percent off everything in the store. The store will close when everything is liquidated, DeJulio said. He wasn't sure how long that would be.

The store is known for durable brands such as Carhartt, Wolverine, Timberland, Red Wing and Dickies. Signs are painted on exterior walls, and line the parking lot. It's long-known slogan in Central New York: "Not your average Army-Navy store."

"It's hard," he said. "This is the only place I've ever worked. I started here as a kid. But it was time."

"Really, Rick?" asked a customer, wearing an army fatigue cap and T-shirt, when he entered the store on Monday.

The DeJulios own the building, which occupies a triangular lot with plenty of parking on the Lodi Street side. It is for sale.

Dominic DeJulio was the cobbler who started the business in 1929. His sons, Rudy and John, started it as an Army-Navy store in the middle of World War II. Rick is Rudy's son.

In a 1994 profile of the business in the Herald-Journal, Rick DeJulio explained the family business philosophy: "You have to put in a lot of time. Our big thing is getting out on the floor to help customers. Customers want."

On Monday, DeJulio cut a reporter's interview short as customers continued to file. He saw a man who needed help finding boots in the right size.

BREVARD COUNTY, FL. - When military personnel are discharged or retired, their uniforms are often thought of. Many sit in storage for years, then go to thrift stores, garage sales or they can even be sold online.

The Navy veteran collected hundreds of uniforms just to keep them out of the hands of people who didn't serve, storing them in a nondescript storefront in Brevard County.

"There's nothing for sale here," Vaughan said, pointing to rows upon rows of dress uniforms hanging on racks, some dating back to World War II.

"Do you see the one with the blue star?" Vaughan said, pointing to a wool army jacket. "That guy was in World War II. Do you understand how hard he worked to get the rank of sergeant?"

The olive oil coat on the top rack is a fitting example of what Vaughan wears to protect all these fabrics.

He called the collection, The Dover Detail, and it was an offshoot of his nonprofit called Down the Road Thrift. The thrift store he owns in Cocoa helps the homeless and newly housed veterans with their household items and camping needs.

Vaughan continues to receive donations related to military service, everything from uniforms to awards. He realized that other businesses would probably receive similar donations and sell them as costumes or novelties.
