A pilot died Monday after his plane's propeller struck him at Gillespie Field.

Monica Zeck, a spokeswoman for the city of El Cajon, said the pilot and one passenger were on board when the plane taxied out of the hangar at the west end of the airport around 8:30 a.m. The single-engine plane reportedly stalled and the 41-year-old pilot was trying to crank the propeller when he was hit.

He was taken to a hospital where he died, said Sec. His name has not yet been released.
A blue-and-white 1974 Piper Cherokee fixed-wing plane was registered to a Lakeside man, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
Graeme Koch, a flight instructor at the airport's Jeans Flight Training, said starting the propeller was dangerous. Once turned on, Koch said, the metal blades can immediately spin at up to 2,000 revolutions per minute.
He said safety is the first thing he teaches his students, as they are told to stay near the propellers and not touch them.

Koch said he was flying when the crash happened. He said neither he nor any of his students witnessed it.
She could not recall a similar incident at the airport during her five years of teacher training.
Last month, 23-year-old Lauren Scruggs of Texas was seriously injured when she walked into a moving airplane propeller that sliced through the left side of her face and shoulder and severed her left arm. After a trip to see the Christmas lights in Dallas, Scruggs stepped into the propeller.
